DOMAIN NAME NEWS : Vietnam ranks second in Southeast Asia for national domain names
VietNamNet Bridge – The Vietnam Internet Centre (VNNIC) on January 13 announced reaching its 100,000 .vn national domain name - ranking second after Singapore in Southeast Asia for the number of national domain names.
VNNIC’s director Nguyen Le Thuy said this is the number of activated domain names, the total registered domain names is up to 120,000. Thuy said that Vietnam reached the goal nearly one year before the schedule because the country aimed to 100,000 national domain names by the end of 2010.
Deputy minister of information and communications Le Nam Thang said that with 100,000 .vn domain names and around 80,000 international domain names, it is clear that the development of Internet in Vietnam is very strong.
Though ranking second in the region, the ratio of national domain names to population in Vietnam is still modest. Singapore, with only 5 million people, has up to 110,000 national domain names. This fact shows that their remains great potential for the .vn domain name market.
After the government issued a decree on Internet management, VNNIC asked the Ministry of Information and Communications to issue policies to manage Internet resources of Vietnam based on the change from the ask-give mechanism to registration based on the principle of equality. This is the major reason for the fast growth of .vn domain names in recent years, which averaged at 17 percent per year.

Symantec Sees Large Drop In Spam From Domains In China
Samir Patil has blogged on the Symantec site that the company’s Symantec Probe Network has registered a DECREASE in spam from domains registered in China since early December. He reported that .cn spam fell from 30-50 percent daily to about 20 percent.
“It appears that the drop is due to the recent enhancement in domain registration procedures introduced by China’s Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). On December 11, CNNIC announced a new registration procedure for .cn domains,” he said.
In December, China announced that those registering domains in the country would be required to do so using paper forms. Also, only businesses registered by the state would be allowed to register domains.
Spammers commonly used sites registered in China for Canadian pharmacy spam campaigns.
This is great. Maybe the one thing that spammers can’t do is something as low-tech as filling out paper forms.
I’ll be interested to see:
— if the Chinese authorities can lower that 20 percent figure further
— what countries the spammers will move to
— if any other government tries the same approach.

The company that led the investigation into the Internet Explorer hack from China that sparked the Google controversy has confirmed that details of the exploit have been published online.
The exploit has already led to Microsoft urging its customers to upgrade from IE6, but the McAfee – the company that was pulled into investigate – has now confirmed that the code used in 'Operation Aurora' is now online.
"Unfortunately, the risk has been compounded because the attack code that exploits this Internet Explorer vulnerability has now been posted in the public domain, increasing the possibility of widespread attacks," says a McAfee release.
Of course, the message form the computer security company is 'use our computer security' but the underlying threat of the compromise is clear.
Government attacks
McAfee described the attack back when it confirmed that IE had been one of the vectors as similar to the high-cost narrow target attacks on government and critical data.
"We have never seen attacks of this sophistication in the commercial space," said Dmitri Alperovitch, a Vice President of Research with McAfee.
"We have previously only seen them in the government space."

Lacoste gets hands on lacostebuy.com domain name
Lacoste,am apparel company that sells high-end clothing, footwear, perfume and some other products filed with the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center, requesting the domain name lacostebuy.com, to be transfered to them. It is well known that Lacoste has many registered trademarks for the term "Lacoste" all over the world.Because the respondent,Liu Dong Ping, did not respond in any way,it's clear that the disputed domain name was registered in bad faith.
"No legitimate Lacoste merchandise is being offered for sale at the disputed website and the Respondent’s use of the Domain Name to sell counterfeit Lacoste merchandise is clearly in bad faith.
The Respondent currently earns revenue directly by drawing consumers to its site by its unauthorized use of the Complainant’s LACOSTE mark in its Domain Name."

Having established all three elements required ,the Panel ordered the domain name,lacostebuy.com to be transfered from the respondent to the compliant.

DOMAIN NEWS : Candidates, Squatters, and Gripers: A Primer on Political Cybersquatting and a Proposal for Reform
During last year's election, were you hoping to read-up on Barack Obama's abortion stance? Too bad, if you went to Obama ForPresident.com. It featured crossword puzzles and fantasy football rather than public-policy papers. Were you looking to volunteer for U.S. Senate candidate John Sununu? If you visited JohnSununu.com, it allowed you to sign up for a free online dating service but not to sign on to a political campaign. Did you want to help finance John McCain's bid for the presidency? During much of the 2008 campaign season, a contribution submitted through the official-looking JohnMcain.com would have supported a man in Houston, Texas, without one nickel funding McCain's run for the White House.
All three of these web sites were intuitively linked to prominent U.S. politicians, but none were owned by the candidates or their campaigns. These sites exemplified a broader trend. Without any legitimate affiliation, people nab rights to web sites that evoke politicians' names. They do it for profit. They do it for spite. They do it to broadcast criticisms. They do it out of egotism or to indulge their idea of fun. Most importantly, they do it often and they do it everywhere. "Political cybersquatting," as this practice is known, is occurring with increasing frequency around the world.
This article discusses political cybersquatting's causes and proximate harms. The next section offers necessary background information on Internet processes and governance. The following section describes the politicalcybersquatting problem by showing that (1) candidates are seriously injured by cybersquatting, (2) candidates are exceptionally exposed to cybersquatting, and (3) candidates cannot rely on existing preventive and remedial methods to consistently solve their cybersquatting problems. Finally, the article proposes a new specialized top-level domain, ".pol," as a way to mitigate political cybersquatting's
harms.

Bahrain Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) recently attended the Arab Top Level Domain Names Steering Committee Meetings held in Damascus, Syria, during which Mr. Ahmed Al Doseri, TRA Bahrain's representative, was appointed president of the Committee that comprises representatives from the Kingdom of Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Yemen.
The Committee is tasked by the League of Arab States with the direct supervision and follow-up on the League's application for the domains (.arab) and the equivalent in Arabic (.arab).
TRA's ICT Manager Mr. Ahmed Al Doseri, who chaired the steering committee meeting, commented, "The creation and use of a ".arab" or Arabic equivalent domain will ensure greater regional identity and over time will help to bridge the digital divide by encouraging Arabic content development and ease of navigation for those people who only read and write in Arabic."
The international body that oversees internet names, Internet Corporation for Assigned Numbers and Names (ICANN), announced in November 2009 that it will accept applications for non-Latin alphabet domains. This will bring the Internet much closer to the diversified locales of the world's varied cultures.

DOMAIN NEWS : SIDN implements Whois changes from today

The changes are designed to protect registrants’ privacy, as requested by the local internet community during the 2008 Domain Name Debate.
SIDN’s Whois service is a website application that members of the public can use to look up information about .nl domain names. You can check, for example, whether a given domain name is available for registration. It is also possible to find contact details for the registrants of names that have already been registered. If the registrant is a private individual – a ‘natural person’, not an organisation – his or her contact details constitute personal information. During the 2008 Domain Name Debate, the internet community’s interest in having access to registrants’ contact details was weighed up against the individual’s interest in keeping personal information private. The outcome of the debate was a decision that less information about each registrant should be available to the general public.
SIDN’s Dispute Resolution Regulations for .nl Domain Names have been revised in line with the changes to the Whois service.

DOMAIN NEWS : Group behind Twitter hack takes down Baidu.com
The group that took down Twitter.com last month has apparently claimed another victim: China's largest search engine Baidu.com.
Baidu.com was offline late Monday, but at one point it displayed an image saying "This site has been hacked by Iranian Cyber Army," according to a report in the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party and other Web sites.
With more than half of China's Internet search market, Baidu is by far China's most-used search engine. The company could not immediately be reached for comment.
Not much is known about the Iranian Cyber Army, which first gained notoriety with its December 18 Twitter attack. Hacking groups such as this are constantly defacing Web sites, but it is extremely rare for them to take down a site as widely used as Twitter or Baidu.com.
According to security experts, Baidu's domain name records appear to have been tampered with. On Monday, the company was using domain name servers belonging to HostGator, a Florida ISP, instead of the Baidu.com nameservers the company normally uses. "It looks like their domain account credentials may have been snagged," said Paul Ferguson, a researcher with the antivirus vendor Trend Micro.
That's the same technique that was used to hijack Twitter, when Iranian Cyber Army hackers were apparently able to log in to the account used to manage Twitter's DNS records and redirect visitors to another Web server that posted a message similar to the one spotted on Baidu.com. That attack knocked Twitter offline for more than an hour.
Baidu's domain name registrar, Register.com, could not be reached immediately for comment.

Baidu's domain name registrar, Register.com, could not be reached immediately for comment.

DOMAIN NEWS : DomainState.com Forum For Sale
Earlier today DomainState.com’s owners placed their 7 year old domaining forum up for sale. Their reason given for selling; “It is with a sad heart that we have realized that it is no longer something we can commit the same level of energy as we once did.”
Stats:
Google Page Rank: 4
Google Search: Ranks third for “domain forum” “domaining forum” domainer forum”
Alexa: 67,726
Compete: 2846 Unique and 15042 Total Visits
If my math is correct then this forum has over 14,000 active and inactive members to go along with over 450,000 posts. The three owners do account for about 10% of those posts.
Sales price? Open to offers but would like to sell within the next couple of weeks. If you are interested in making an offer for the forum then submit to admin@domainstate.com.
You can read more, direct from the owners by visiting DomainState.com.
What do you think the forum will sell for?
My guess, if compete.com stats are anywhere near correct then $7,000-$12,000. I believe their member database is worth this price alone. Anyone looking to broker domain names could certainly benefit from a database like this. Now, if the site was already monetized and income stats could be provided then it would probably sell for a lot more. Whoever purchases this site should be able to easily make $1,000 per month starting off. Again, these numbers are purely speculative because compete.com is not the most accurate tool for traffic estimates.

DOMAIN NEWS : Controversial Gambling Domain Seizure Ruling Expected This Month
How Will the Kentucky Supreme Court Rule?
By Chris Crum
Back in 2008, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear announced that he wanted to shut down 141 Internet gambling sites in the state in an effort to stop unregulated online gaming. He filed a civil suit against the domain names and asked the court to force the sites to block access to Kentucky users or give up control of their domain names.
Steve Beshear"Unlicensed, unregulated, illegal Internet gambling poses a tremendous threat to the citizens of the Commonwealth because of its ease, availability and anonymity," said Beshear back then. "The owners and operators of these illegal sites prey on Kentucky citizens, including our youth, and deprive the Commonwealth of millions of dollars in revenue. It's an underworld wrought with scams and schemes. "The Kentucky Supreme Court is expected to make a decision on the case in a set of decisions on January 21.
Beshear has seen a fair amount of criticism for the move, based mostly on the fact that the state of Kentucky does not have a law in place making online gambling illegal. Furthermore, the sites in question are based overseas. Online Casino Advisory went so far as to launch a boycotting campaign on all taxable gambling products in Kentucky:
A judge in Franklin County Kentucky court saw things Beshear's way, but the ruling was overturned by an Appeals court before making its way to the Kentucky Supreme Court.
John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), which has over 13,000 members in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and over a million members in the U.S. once told WebProNews that Governor Beshear's attempt to block access to online sites in the state "is hypocritical and shortsighted."

DOMAIN NEWS : Bulgaria Conducts Online Poll to Find Cyrillic TLD
The most popular options for a Cyrillic Top Level Domain for Bulgarians are ".бг" and ".бгр" according to an online poll conducted by Bulgaria's Ministry of Transport, Information Technologies and Communications (MTITC) in December 2009.
The two options translate as .BG and .BGR respectively, however there are concerns that .бг too closely resembles Brazil's country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) of .BR.
Hence the Bulgarians are keeping their options open with .бгр.
According to a report in Novinite, MTITC has also organised a round table with the participation of organizations interested in the application process for the proposed new TLD. The round table would include the .BG registry Register BG, Uninet and Public Internet Registry among others.
There was also a second online survey entitled "Selection and employment of registry of the domain in Cyrillic". This survey looked at people's attitudes about the standards to be met by the registry for the proposed new Bulgarian Cyrillic TLD. Two thirds of respondents said the administrator for the Cyrillic TLD should be different to the existing .BG registry.

Apple wins 16 web domains via ICANN complaint

Apple has won the rights to 16 domain names through a complaint to ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, reports say. Apple first submitted its complaint to ICANN in November, pursuing action through the organization's Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy. The domains were all owned by Daniel Bijan, a Los Angeles man and self-described "mega producer, singer, [and] entrepreneur."
Apple suggests that some of the domains owned by Bijan were "confusingly similar" to its trademarks, like the iPod, iPhone and MacBook. Others are described as having been used in "bad faith," forwarding people to competing products. Bijan could potentially have defended his ownership, but did not submit a response to ICANN and as such is considered to have forfeited.

DOMAIN NEWS : IPv4 Addresses Near Exhaustion With Two to Three Years of Addresses Left
Predictions for the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses in 2010 by IANA will not come true reports Enterprise Networking Planet, but it will happen in the next two to three years.
The reports comes from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week where the American Registry for Internet Names (ARIN) was advocating that vendors start making the move to IPv6 now.
"We're at about 10.2 percent (IPv4 address space) remaining globally," John Curran, president and CEO of ARIN told InternetNews.com. "At our current trend rate we've got about 625 days before we will not have new IPv4 addresses available. We're still handling IPv4 requests from ISPs, hosting companies and large users for IPv4 address space, but that's a very short time period."

DOMAIN NEWS : MSNBC.com acquires Breakingnews.com Web address
MSNBC.com has recently acquired the rights to the URL Breakingnews.com. Currently the still-in-beta site aggregates a continuous stream of headlines from news sites across the globe and drives traffic to those properties. The site does not feature any original content. Until recently the URL had been owned by Breaking News Network, Inc.
MSNBC.com has yet to announce any plans to change Breakingnews.com’s format. Last month, the news site assumed control of the Breakingnews.com Twitter feed, which claims close to 1.6 million followers. That move, along with Tuesday’s (Jan. 5) acquisition are part of a budding MSNBC.com strategy to target news junkies who are interested in receiving the most up to date information fast—without the core site’ programming bells and whistles, according to Charlie Tillinghast, president of MSNBC Digital Network.

Microsoft wins domain name case covering eight domains

Microsoft, the United States-based multinational computer technology corporation has recently won a domain name case against Patrick McAuliffe. The company submitted a complaint to the National Arbitration Forum, requesting eight domain names,wwwbing.com, wwbing.com,wwwwbing.com,bingf.com,b8ng.com,b9ng.com> ,binfg.com, and binhg.com to be transferred from the respondent to the complainant.
Bing is the current web search engine from Microsoft. Therefore,Microsoft has applied to register the "Bing" trademark in a number of jurisdictions in including United States and Trademark Office.
The complainant accuses Patrick McAuliffe for registering a confusingly similar to its trademark and, moreover, for registering and using the disputed domain names in bad faith.
On the other hand, the respondent gives some interesting answers in his defense. He sent a relatively short email to the National Arbitration Forum in which he explained that he was unaware of wwwbing.com being similar to complainant's trademark.
" Microsoft launched bing.com on 28th May 2009. This was a full two months AFTER I registered wwwbing.com on on 26th march 2009. I was at that time unaware of wwwbing.com being similar to the search engine bing.com.
I am using the domain wwwbing.com to promote a children's book called "Walter Will Wawrinka Bing". It involves a troll who has supernatural and magical powers in modern Scandinavia. It will be published on the 5th April 2010 in Ireland. I have every right to register a domain name to promote a book.",said Patrick McAuliffe in his response.
Moreover,he explained in the e-mail that he never sent an e-mail to Bill Gates offering him to sell the wwwbing.com domain name .
However,Microsoft provided evidence that the respondent wanted to sell the domain name to the complainant.
Because Microsoft managed to demonstrate all the elements needed, the Panel ordered that the domain names be transferred from the respondent to the complainant.
Google launches Nexus One without owning the domain name

Google, has recently launched their mobile phone, called the "Nexus One" .
But,the domain name nexusone.com is already registered by Peter Villanueva.
Even though Google could have negotiated with Peter Villanueva for this domain name ,it seems that until now they haven't done that.
All in all it seems that Google Nexus One will be a tremendous success.
With a thickness of 11.5 mm, Nexus One is a little thinner than the Apple phone product. Another thing to be mentioned is the battery capacity. Officially,Nexus One has 250 hours of standby time, 5 hours 3G Internet use, 7 hours of video viewing and 20 hours for audio files.Unofficially, people have finished the battery in just one hour and a half by running a game while the screen was "full-brightness".
The phone price will be somewhere around 530 dollars and for now is already available in the United States, but soon will reach the entire world..
.nl domain is one of the world’s securest TLDs

For the third year in a row, the .nl domain is one of the world’s securest top-level domains. That is the conclusion of an annual survey by US security software company McAfee. The Dutch domain is 21st on the list of 104 TLDs, where the last TLD, .gov , is the most secure and the first, .cm is the least secure.
Phishing and malware
McAfee has revised its assessment method for this year, making the results hard to compare with those from previous years. Last year, the Netherlands was 19th on a list of 74 TLDs. McAfee’s rankings indicate how likely it is that an internet user will encounter threats such as phishing and malware when visiting websites within the surveyed domains. Phishing is a form of fraud that involves luring people to a fake website, made to look like the site of a trusted organisation such as a bank. On the fake site, the unsuspecting visitor attempts to log in, thus ‘giving’ the fraudsters his/her user name and password or credit card number. The fraudsters are then able to access the victim’s bank account or use his/her card. Malware is a general term applied to malicious and/or harmful software, such as computer viruses and worms. McAfee checked out more than 540,000 .nl websites to arrive at the rating.
Risks
McAfee concluded that there are threats everywhere on the internet and that the problems are getting worse. However, suspect sites are not evenly distributed across the various TLDs. It is not realistic to expect that all threats can ever be eliminated, because cyber criminals are clever and resourceful. However, internet security has been improved dramatically by the combined efforts of registries, registrars and consumers.
Australian Anti-Govt Censorship Website Learns .AU Registration Rules
The registrants of the domain name StephenConroy.com.au have finally read the rules on .AU domain registration following their initial controversial registration of the domain name.
The domain name was used for a satirical website to make fun of the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy following the announcement in mid-December of the government's "measures to improve safety of the internet for families". Or considered by many to be internet censorship.
However the domain name was not eligible to be registered by the registrants as it did not comply with .AU's "close and substantial connection" rule where registrants must have a connection with the domain name. And the registrants were not able to provide any legitimate reasons as to why they should be allowed to have the domain name.
AuDA then very promptly deleted the domain name causing much debate as to whether there was any government interference. Any such interference was denied by both auDA and the minister. The domain name was then put in the pending delete list, and upon deletion was promptly re-registered by the same registrants, but this time they linked it to a company they had formed called
"This registration ... would be on the basis that they have a registered business name and that registered business name is 'stephenconroy' and so therefore they are entitled to stephenconroy.com.au because it is an exact match to their registered business name," auDA CEO Chris Disspain told iTnews.com.au.
Currently the website for stephenconroy.com.au holds correspondence giving the registrant's version of events, with hyperbole allowing them to create what they will no doubt consider a great story. But really, the lesson is, one should be aware of the registration rules before registering a domain name in any TLD!

IPv6 and the IDNs - EuroDNS First to deploy IDN with IPv6 Worlwide

The Luxembourg IPv6 Council has followed closely the introduction of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), especially the recent launch of the .eu IDN in December 2009.
The introduction of IDN will require more IP address space which is no more guaranteed by the remaining 10% of the IPv4 address pool expected to be depleted by 2011. IPv6 will therefore extend the needed IP address capacity for IDN deployment around the world.
The implementation of IDNs gives companies and individuals based in the European Union the chance to register domain names that contain non-Latin characters under the .eu domain. The .eu IDNs support the 23 official languages of the European Union as well as the entire alphabets.
It was important for the Luxembourg IPv6 Council to analyze the interaction and market adaptation of these IDNs in relation with the next-generation Internet Protocol version 6. It was also a major step forward for key players and domain name registrars to implement IPv6 within their technology.
Together with EuroDNS, one of the IDN domain registrars, the Taskforce was able to evaluate possible influences, and confirm that both the implementation and usability of IPv6 in relation with IDN domain names works as smoothly and easily as for non IDN domain names.
“IDNs & IPv6 are good room-mates to extend the Internet over and beyond current limited scale. EuroDNS has already implemented IPv6 for .eu IDN. This is a major milestone for the New Internet in the making” states IPv6 Forum President Latif LADID, based in Luxembourg.
EuroDNS is a leading registrar of international domain name, offering more than 150 extensions. Any user who registered an IDN domain name at EuroDNS.com can simply go through his DNS management interface and select an IPv6 address for any registered domain name.
Xavier Buck, CEO of EuroDNS explains, “At EuroDNS, we always strive to implement and adapt to the highest technological advancements existing on the market. For the development of .eu IDNs we felt it was important to use the most adapted technology, hence IPv6 that provides greater possibilities and name resolution”.
For more information about the IPv6 Forum, go to: http://www.ipv6forum.com , and to know more about EuroDNS and .eu IDNs, please go to: www.eurodns.com
About the IPv6 Forum

Are Non-Latin Alphabet Domain Names a Phishing Threat?
In a recent move ICANN decided it would be just fine if domain names used non-Latin characters. Since the inception of online domain names, all addresses had to be in the Latin characters most of us are familiar with .The ICANN decision will mean addresses could use, for example, Russian Cyrillic or Asian characters. While this seems all well and good on the surface, there’s a problem lurking. It could let the bad guys run more effective phishing schemes.
A unicode font supports multiple languages simultaneously and can be a real help, but display a Cyrillic word in a Unicode font, and it may look completely different. It may even appear to be an English word.

Google loses out in domain name dispute

Groovle search engine wins its name.
Web development firm 207 Media has won a case filed against it by web giant Google, which claimed the name of the firm’s custom search engine Groovle was too similar to its own.
Google argued to Icann-approved independent arbitration body the National Arbitration Forum (NAF) that Groovle’s name was “nearly identical or confusingly similar” to its own. This confusion, it argued, is exacerbated by the fact that Groovle acts in its own words as a “groovy custom search homepage” and as such could be used as a front end for Google search.
“Here, the domain name is only two letters different from Complainant’s Google mark; therefore, the domain name is confusingly similar to Complainant’s mark,” noted Google’s contention in the original complaint.
“Registrant is using the domain name in connection with Complainant’s search engine services and is using a website layout that mimics Google’s search homepage.”
However, the NAF disagreed, saying the Canadian-based 207 Media’s domain name was “sufficiently differentiated” from the Google trademark, saying it “contains the significant letters ‘r’ and ‘v’ which serve to distinguish the sound, appearance, meaning, and connotation of ‘groovle’ from Complainant’s Google mark”.
The arbitration body also argued that and alterations of the groovle name “clearly transform the predominant word of the domain name to ‘groove’ or ‘groovy’, not Google”.
The decision will be a blow to Google, which was looking to absorb the groovle domain into its growing collection. The last time the web behemoth lost a similar case was in 2004 when the owner of the froogles.com domain convinced the forum it is not confusingly similar to Google.
2009 Domain Dunce Award: Parava

Domain name registrar shuts down, exposing a host of unknown problems.
It wasn’t quite RegisterFly, but the fall of domain name registrar Parava this year was a stark reminder that the domain registration business remains poorly regulated with lax compliance.
ICANN sent a breach notice to Parava on February 27th, notifying it of major infractions including not paying accreditation fees, failing to escrow whois data, and failing to take action in response to invalid whois complaints. Heck, the company’s own domain name had an incorrect whois record.
The registrar was small, managing only 36,000 domains. But it included some doozies, including Marc Ostrofsky’s MutualFunds.com.
After failing to cure the breach, ICANN terminated Parava in April. Parava stopped operating, effectively cutting domain owners off from managing their domain names — even making DNS changes.
ICANN selected Tucows as the new registrar for the domains and the domains started transitioning there in May. As soon as the transition started, registrants realized something was wrong. People who had renewed for 5 or 10 years found that their domains expired this year. It turns out Parava was taking customer payments for multi-year renewals and only renewing a year at a time.
With every hardship is a lesson. Here are six signs your domain registrar is going defunct.
DOMAIN NEWS : Putting 2009 Into Perspective
A quick look back at 2009.
2010 is here. I’d like to put a few things into perspective from the past year.
The stock market is up 35% this year. Did you invest any money at the end of 2008? Were you too scared? Perhaps you pulled out all of your money in fear? As has happened every time the stock market crashes, it has had a big bounce.
We’re safe from terrorism. I really don’t understand what the big hubbub is about the attempted terrorist attack in Detroit. The terrorist failed, after all. It reminds me of when “shoe bomber” Richard Reid tried to blow up a jet with an explosive in his shoes. He failed. You know why? Because it’s really hard to blow up a plane with your shoes. Yet now we all have to take our shoes off at the airport. So in many ways Reid got what he wanted: fear. The latest dimwit tried to blow up a plane with his underpants. I hope that means we don’t have to take of our underwear to get through security.
I’m also a bit confused about how terrorists react. I mean, they were quick to claim credit for the most recent failed attempt, where all some guy managed to do was light his butt on fire. Who raises their hand to claim responsibility for that kind of failure?
There are over 80 million .com domain names registered now. That compares to about 8 million at the start of the decade. And they said the tech bubble bursting would devalue domain names…
The mainstream media continues to get it wrong. They got it wrong all year. Here’s a finale from the London Times, which suggests that non-Roman characters (IDN) will now be allowed for the first time for the part of the domain name to the left of the dot. Um, you’ve been able to do that for years. I think they mean to the right of the dot — the top level domain name.
The 2009 BCS Football Champion will be crowned in a game that takes place in 2010. That has always bothered me. But I can wait another week for the Horns to win it all.

DOMAIN NEWS : Top 10 Security Challenges For 2010
Computing is in a state of constant change. Apps are migrating toward the cloud. Mobile devices are changing the way we interact with our machines and the way we connect to networks. Real-time information has become increasingly important. The threats are changing too.
With 2010 freshly upon us, 'tis the season to ponder future threats. Last month's threat of a portly, bearded man entering one's household through a chimney was mitigated by a sufficiently hot flame, but cybercriminals aren't bothered by physical barriers. They can enter computers through network cables or a wireless connection and make off with valuable information.
Defending against such threats may require an investment in security, but for most IT pros, that's preferable to receiving an e-mail from a hacker that reads, "IM IN UR PC STEALIN UR DATA."
While predicting the future too well is self-defeating -- published foreknowledge of a planned attack would lead attackers to try something else -- consideration of past and current trends can offer insight into tomorrow's danger zones.

DOMAIN NEWS : Citigroup wins domain name dispute
Citigroup,an American financial services company, has recently won a domain name through arbitration decision .
The company submitted a complaint to the National Arbitration Forum, requesting the domain name citimortgage.net to be transferred from the respondent to the complainant.
But,this isn't an usually domain name case,in which the complainant would have had to demonstrate that the respondent registered and used the domain name in bad faith and that the domain is confusingly similar to its trademark.
It seems that there was a communication between the respondent,Domain Privacy LTD,and the complainant. Therefore, the respondent agreed to transfer the domain name to complainant.
"In this case, the parties have both asked for the domain name to be transferred to the Complainant . . . Since the requests of the parties in this case are identical, the Panel has no scope to do anything other than to recognize the common request, and it has no mandate to make findings of fact or of compliance ."
“Under such circumstances, where Respondent has agreed to comply with Complainant’s request, the Panel felt it to be expedient and judicial to forego the traditional UDRP analysis and order the transfer of the domain names.”

Balenciaga scores victory in domain name case

Balenciaga,is a fashion house founded by Cristóbal Balenciaga, a Spanish designer.Christian Dior himself referred to Balenciaga as "the master of us all" . The fashion house submitted a complaint with the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center requesting the domain name balenciage.com to be transferred to them.
The company owns many trademark registration all around the world for "Balenciaga".Therefore it is more than obvious that the disputed domain name is confusingly similar to their company.
Therefore, they contended in the complaint that the disputed domain name is confusingly similar to its trademark.
Moreover, they contended that the respondent registered and used the disputed domain name in bad faith.
"The disputed domain name appears on a pay per click site. The site is divided into a number of sectors with sponsored searches for such products as women’s shoes, designer handbags, wholesale handbags and plus size women’s clothing as well as for Balenciaga and Gucci handbags. The obvious purpose of such sites is to generate revenue which of course is a “commercial gain” . "
Because the respondent failed to submit a response in this proceeding and because the complainant managed to demonstrate all the elements needed, the Panel decided the disputed domain name to be transferred from the respondent to the complainant.

AOL gets hands on apquest.com domain name
AOL ,the American global Internet services and media company, has recently submitted a complaint to the National Arbitration Forum requesting the domain name apquest.com to be transferred from the respondent to the complainant.
The company owns several trademark registrations with the United States Patent and Trademark Office fo the "Mapquest.com" mark.
Therefore, they contended in the complaint that the domain name is confusingly similar to its trademark.
Moreover, they contended that the respondent registered and used the domain name in bad faith .
"Respondent is using the domain name to resolve to a website featuring hyperlinks to third-parties that offer competing Internet, wireless, and business mapping applications. Internet users that would have used Complainant’s services may instead find a competitor of Complainant because of Respondent’s confusingly similar disputed domain name. The Panel finds this use of a disputed domain name that is confusingly similar to Complainant’s MAPQUEST.COM mark, constitutes disruption and evidences bad faith registration and use."
